1. History

It all started with the dream of two people: Erika from the Netherlands and Madhan from India both dreamed about a medical project for people in the poorest and remotest parts of the South of India. When they met a couple of years ago, they decided to draw up a plan to make decent health care, a right for everybody, available for the people in these parts. Madhan and Erika first started to research what the basic need for medical care was. This done, they could get to work, thanks to sponsor donations from the Netherlands. They established the Medical Camps India Foundation and since then have been able to provide free basic medical care on a very regular basis to these remote villages.

At first, the Foundation was able to organize a medical day camp once a week in a village in the area. The medical team rented a jeep to get to the village every week. This base camp was within reach of ten surrounding villages. Each camp day, the team provided an average of two hundred people with good health care and medication.

At the beginning of 2009, the Foundation had sufficient funds to expand the camps to two days a week and only six months later, the medical team was able to visit five different villages five times a week. Every week, the team visits a village on the same day and time. The villagers know exactly when they can see the doctor. The medical team consists of a doctor, a nurse and a pharmacist, all from the area themselves. Each camp day, they help around 150 to 200 people. Every month, about four thousand people make use of the facilities. In addition to medical care, patients also receive education that helps prevent common medical problems. Lastly, special eye and dental camps are held every month.

In the meantime, Erika and Madhan have continued building their dreams. With the construction of a mobile clinic, their second dream is coming true. After permission of the government, the Foundation will be able to take the mobile hospital on the road. This makes it possible for the team to work more efficient and more hygienic and to visit even more villages. With the help of the mobile clinic, the Foundation will be able to reach over 43.000 people in remote areas and offer them medical care. It will also be easier to provide education programs from the mobile clinic.
